Rabbi Daniel Fried

Rabbi Daniel Fried passed away on Friday, January 12 at the age of 78. Rabbi Fried was born in Greenville, South Carolina to parents Rabbi Philip Fried and Sounia Fried. A third generation Rabbi he would often say he was groomed for the profession by his father throughout his formative years. He attended rabbinical school in both Jerusalem and New York City as well as completed graduate courses at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and at Dropsie College in Philadelphia. He started his career in New Jersey and in 1980 accepted the pulpit at Congregation Anshe Emeth in Hudson, New York where he served for over 40 years.  He cherished serving his community right up until his brief hospital stay. Rabbi Fried was a passionate educator and held a permanent NYS secondary school teaching certificate. He was one of the founding members of the Hudson Interfaith Council and he led the organization as president for 20 years, continuing his participation well after his presidency ended. Many Hudson organizations benefited from his chaplaincy over the last 44 years. He had a lifelong fascination with languages and would often be seen with a dictionary of languages such as Yiddish, French, or German so he could practice his vocabulary at a moment’s notice. Throughout his life nothing made him happier than a bowl of ice cream in the evenings. In recent years he derived great pleasure from spending time with his grandchildren.

Rabbi Fried was predeceased by his parents, Sounia (Noveck) Fried and Philip Fried, along with his older brother Ronald Fried. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Denise (Mandel) Fried; his two sisters Rochelle Nalaboff (Lloyd), Tamara Gerson (Rabbi Ronald); his sister-in-law Miriam Schwed (David), his two children Joel Fried (Rebecca), and Joshua Fried (Lindsay); his grandchildren Adelina and Liora Fried, and Dominic, Aria, and Zoe Fried, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family requests that donations be made to Congregation Anshe Emeth, 240 Joslen Blvd., Hudson, NY 12534 according to his wishes.
